If Thailand is a country obsessed with its food, then Bangkok is surely the steaming melting pot that oozes down to the rest of the country. From fancy restaurants tucked away down tiny sois to popular street stalls lining almost every road, there’s a freshly cooked culinary delight around every corner. Whether you’re after a restaurant meal or a hawker-style dish, here’s where to find the best food in Bangkok.

Chinatown

Bangkok’s Chinatown

Yes, we’ll start with the most obvious! Bangkok’s Chinatown has everything from dim sum to traditional Thai noodles. It’s also a popular spot for tucking into Peking duck, plus shark’s fin and bird’s nest soups. Bangkok’s Chinatown is a colorful and chaotic part of the city that’s open all hours but only really comes alive after sunset. Both T & K Seafood and Lek and Rut come highly recommended and are always teeming with tourists and locals alike. For a more refined Chinatown foodie experience, head to Siang Ping Loh or Tang Jai Yoo.

Sukhumvit Soi 38

The food stalls that line Sukhumvit Soi 38 are open from sunset until the early hours of the morning. The stalls are clean, and the food is tasty and cheap, making this area just as popular with the locals as it is with Bangkok’s visitors. Dining here is a case of following your nose, making your selection and pulling up a plastic chair to devour your chosen dish. If pad thai is your thing, definitely head to the Pad Thai Fire Look stall near the street’s entrance on the right. For something sweet before you leave, head to the Mango and Sticky Rice stall, where you can grab some tropical fruit and rice covered in coconut sauce. Yum.

Khao San Road

Yes, the Khao San Road is awash with Western options, and the Thai food is toned down to cater to tourist palates, but in recent years the variety and quality of the restaurants and stalls along this famous street have seen a significant upturn. If nothing else, the area is a great starting point if you’ve just arrived in Bangkok and want to ease gently into the local cuisine. Vegetarians should check out May Kaidee, which is just a stone’s throw from the Khao San Road and has quite rightly garnered a reputation for serving delicious, freshly made veggie food. (It also runs an incredibly successful cooking class.)

Taling Chan Floating Market

There are other floating markets in and around Bangkok, but the Taling Chan Floating Market is still frequented by the locals, which ensures the food remains authentic and prices stay low. Located on the Thonburi side of the Chao Phraya River, the Taling Chan Market consists of several floating docks with “canoe kitchens” tethered to them. Visitors purchase goods and sit on mats at low tables to eat. Seafood is the star attraction here, although deep-fried tofu, and shredded egg and pork dishes  along with oodles of other tasty options are widely available. There’s also a range of fresh fruits, vegetables and seafood on offer at several of the stalls.

The area that used to be the Bang Rak market should be on every foodie’s list of places to go while in Bangkok. The stretch between Saphan Taksin BTS station and the junction of Charoen Krung and Silom Road is home to a fantastic selection of authentic Thai food stalls, with the smell of garlic, stir-fried noodles, steamed dumplings and roasted meats filling the air as you wander along. If you want more of a sit-down meal, head to trendy Cafe Bangrak (just off Silom Road, along Sala Daeng), which is particularly well-known for its stir-fried seafood dishes  although it also serves some delicious smoothies.
